Well, our little society has made it to our second month of tobacco discovery and discussion. I’m continually excited by all of the incredible blends that we will sample together, and I believe the June tobacco selection will not disappoint.
Aromatic Selection: Cornell & Diehl – Green River Vanilla
This month’s aromatic selection is a black, vanilla cavendish made from the finest burley in the Green River valley region of Kentucky. A decadent vanilla aroma dominates this tin note, reminding one of fresh baked cookies. This lovely flavor carries over to the smoke and sticks with you all the way down the bowl. The tobacco itself is quite mild, allowing the subtle vanilla topping to shine through without being overwhelming. This blend makes a fine all day smoke. I’ve smoked this blend several times never once experiencing tongue bite, and the moisture out of the tin is spot on. This blend is sure to make you popular, even with the non-smokers in your life.
Non-Aromatic Selection: BriarWorks – Back Down South
Back Down South is BriarWork’s twist on a classic Virginia/Perique. They have infused this blend with a bourbon that gives it a slightly sweet tinge. Make no mistake however, this is a true non-aromatic and the natural flavors of the Virginia and Perique tobacco come through. The tin note contains a mixture of dried apricots and cherry, as well as the classic peppery spice of the St. James Perique. A soft flake cut breaks apart quickly and allows for easy packing. The flavors mentioned complement each other well, and offer a delightfully sweet and savory experience. The perique gives a good nic hit on the backend of the bowl, and requires minimal relights. This blend can smoke a bit hot, so mind your pace and enjoy yourself. I would certainly recommend this Va/Per as a wonderful after dinner blend, and I believe the flavor profile will only improve with age.
